District Offers Free Meals to All Students and Invites Families to View the Meals App
Fresno Unified’s Nutrition Services looks forward to welcoming students back for the 2025-26 school year with healthy meals, including several new items. Under USDA guidelines, the district will provide meals at no cost to all enrolled students regardless of income levels. This supports the district’s efforts to eliminate all barriers to student learning and helps ensure students are not hungry at school while they are trying to learn.
The program is part of the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), an option available to schools under the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program. The CEP allows high-poverty schools to expand access to free school meals while reducing paperwork and streamlining meal service operation. Meal applications are not required.
New Menu Items
This school year, the district is introducing several new menu items, including:
- Italian penne pasta
- Mashed potatoes chicken bowl
- Cheeseburger sliders
- Chicken burrito bowl
- Buffalo chicken pizza
- Cheese stuffed pasta shells
- Fiesta scramble breakfast bowl
- Upside down blueberry pancake bowl
- Breakfast pizza bagel
Nutrition Services invites families to use the school meals app.
School Meals App:
An app and interactive website are available for parents and guardians to easily view information on school menus for breakfast and lunch each day. The app features an image and description of food items, as well as nutrition and allergen information. The innovative and interactive website and mobile app makes school menus more convenient and informative than ever before. The app can be accessed by searching for “School Menus by Nutrislice” on Google Play or the App Store or visit fresnounified.nutrislice.com.
“With a brand-new school year just around the corner, we’re thrilled to fuel our students’ success with nutritious meals that help them stay sharp and ready to learn. Our incredible Nutrition Services team goes above and beyond every day to serve free breakfast and lunch to our students,” said Superintendent Misty Her.

REVISED: Fresno Unified Issues Statement Clarifying Settlement with Nikki Henry
In view of the inaccuracies and misinformation in the media regarding the Resignation Settlement Agreement and General Release between the Fresno Unified School District and Nikki Henry (“Settlement Agreement”), the District issues this statement of correction and clarification.
GVWire’s article of July 29, 2025, is misleading and inaccurate. Contrary to the assertion attributed to a Trustee, Board members did not give “unofficial permission” to staff to negotiate a settlement with Ms. Henry. Rather, as the July 29, 2025 article notes, David Chavez, Chief of Human Resources, was given unanimous Board authority to reach a settlement with Ms. Henry. “Unofficial permission” is not a term or process referenced in the Brown Act and it does not appear in any District Board policy. Indeed, when, as here, a governing board makes a collective decision it is “official.” (Government Code section 54952.6 defines “action taken.”)
The process undertaken in this matter was consistent with Government Code section 54957, the Brown Act section that provides for the confidentiality of personnel matters, as well as with Government Code section 54957.1, which includes an exception to the “action-taken” report-out requirement when, as here, a potential settlement is dependent on the agreement of the other party. In accordance with this exception, the District released fully-executed copies of the Settlement Agreement upon request.
Therefore, the District did not violate the Brown Act.
Further, contrary to the assertion of the Trustee, there has been no cover-up in the District’s handling of this matter. Information leading up to the settlement with Ms. Henry was in the public domain through various media reports. For example, GVWire itself published articles on May 28 and May 30, 2025, covering the story about the “dossier” developed by Ms. Henry in her role as District Communications Chief. District staff regularly updates trustees with regard to such matters especially when the District or its personnel are under media scrutiny. Even when employees are “in the news,” the District is legally obligated to observe personnel confidentiality, especially when there’s a potential for disciplinary proceedings. Note that Education Code sections 45113 and 45116 set out the due process rights of classified (non-instructional) employees.
The Fresno Teachers Association has claimed on its Facebook page that the Settlement Agreement requires the District to indemnify Ms. Henry. This is not correct. The Settlement Agreement does not include an indemnification provision. We believe this claim arises from references to Government Code sections 825 and 995 in paragraph 4 of the Settlement Agreement. This language is industry standard and simply acknowledges Ms. Henry’s statutory right as a former public employee to request a defense and indemnification for claims arising out of the course and scope of her duties as a public employee. The sentence that follows makes clear that the District does not guarantee, promise, or represent that those protections will be available to Ms. Henry.

Fresno Unified Partners with Zūm to Modernize Student Transportation
Fresno Unified has awarded a five-year transportation contract to Zūm, a leader in modern student transportation. The decision signals the district's commitment to safe, efficient, tech-enabled and more equitable transportation services for students and families. Fresno United is the third largest school district in California, with over 70,000 students and over 100 schools.
Fresno Unified will begin using Zūm’s technology platform in August to manage and monitor all district-operated general education bus routes for the 2025-26 school year.
For the 2026-27 school year, Zūm will begin providing transportation services for all special education routes, including Zūm’s technology platform. Zūm will provide higher wages and expanded benefits for drivers; a new fleet of buses with advanced equipment, including air conditioning; and continuous training and support for drivers and staff.
“Zūm has a proven track record with recruiting and retaining high-quality drivers, implementing best-in-class equipment and technology and a commitment to safety and customer service,” said Fresno Unified Superintendent Misty Her. “We are excited by this new partnership and share Zūm’s mission to ensure safe, reliable rides for every student in our district.”
“Zūm’s partnership with Fresno Unified School District signals a growing national movement for modern, safe and equitable student transportation,” said Ritu Narayan, founder and CEO at Zūm. “Drivers are at the heart of our operation, and we take pride in having the best in the industry. We look forward to working with this outstanding school community.”
Benefits of Zūm include:
- Safe, reliable rides and industry-leading technology: Zūm’s end-to-end platform optimizes routes, reduces student ride times and facilitates transparent, data-driven decisions regarding student transportation. Through the Zūm app, parents can receive real-time data and notifications about their child’s school bus location and their child's pickup and drop-off status. School administrators will be able to access Zūm’s school portal and admin mobile app for real-time ride details, reporting and the ability to manage, monitor and optimize transportation.
- Well-trained and certified drivers: Through SafeGuard, Zūm's proprietary safety technology, driver training and certification program, all drivers not only meet and exceed all state and federal requirements but also are trained on and required to adhere to specific protocols while picking up or dropping off students and while driving. Zūm encourages all new and existing drivers to apply for the 2026-27 school year.
- State-of-the-art buses and facilities: Students and drivers will experience state-of-the-art, air-conditioned buses as well as top-of-the-line equipment and technology designed to enhance their safety and comfort and make drivers’ day-to-day jobs easier and more enjoyable.

Fresno Unified Ensures Financial Stability Amid Funding Challenges
As the state fiscal year came to an end on June 30, Fresno Unified is being proactive to ensure the financial future of our district for both teachers and students.
Fresno is the third largest school district in the state, following Los Angeles and San Diego. For context, we have a much more solid standing for fiscal year 25-26 by comparison, yet every district is considering cutting the budget. The challenges experienced this year were lower enrollment and no additional state funding for education with a low cost of living adjustment. Additionally, Fresno Unified loses $30 million a year to absenteeism. This is a topic we watch with great interest. A change of 1% can affect us by $10,000,000.
The state budget creates an additional challenge by deferring 2/3s of our funding for school year 25/26. While the funding will eventually come, it will arrive later than anticipated. However, that same formula allows us to be flexible with our state funds because 90% of our students are defined as low income. Because we can shift our resources even with the stated challenges, fiscal year budget 25-26 will be balanced.
In all, the district cut $61.9 million in 24/25 and 25/26 from the budget by making reductions at the central office, negotiating elimination of Designated Schools, utilization of grants, eliminating vacant positions and moving special assignment teachers back to the classroom. Most importantly, no teachers were laid off. In fact, teachers have received raises over three years, been given one-hundred percent coverage on health care and classroom caps.
The three-year cycle gave raises to teachers:
2023 – 2024 8.5% raise
2024 – 2025 3% raise and a longevity increase of $10,000 for teachers with more than 25 years of service, making Fresno Unified the highest paid teachers in the area.
2025 – 2026 5.5% raise

Statement in Response to U.S. Department of Education’s Decision to Withhold Federal Funding
We are deeply outraged by the U.S. Department of Education’s decision to withhold critical federal funding that Congress has already allocated to support our schools. This action will result in a devastating $7.1 million loss for Fresno Unified, threatening vital educational programs.
“At Fresno Unified, our commitment to every student remains unwavering,” says Superintendent Misty Her. “As your Superintendent, I will do everything within my power to protect our students and shield them from the consequences of these harmful cuts. We will continue to advocate relentlessly for the funding our students deserve.”
A more detailed budget update will be shared next week.

Fresno State Matches Scholarship Funds from The Foundation for Fresno Unified Students for Bulldog Bound Students
Fresno State will provide $25,000 in matching scholarship funds for students in the Bulldog Bound program, in partnership with The Foundation for Fresno Unified Students. Twenty-five Bulldog Bound students who were awarded $1,000 Fresno Unified Scholarships will receive a matching award from Fresno State. The matching funds will be applied to the students’ full-time enrollment tuition for a total of $500 each semester.
“We’re thrilled that the matching scholarship dollars from Fresno State for our Bulldog Bound students will continue to bridge the financial gap and empower our students to achieve their college dreams,” said Fresno Unified Superintendent Misty Her.
Since its inception in 2009, over $2 million in Fresno Unified Scholarships have been awarded to graduating seniors. This year, $400,000 is being awarded to 315 graduates, along with an extra $41,200 in additional scholarships for a total of $441,200 being awarded to 333 graduates. This represents the largest amount in Fresno Unified history, made possible by philanthropic fundraising efforts of The Foundation for Fresno Unified Students.
“Investing in our students is crucial, and we are deeply grateful to Fresno State for their dedication and partnership through the Bulldog Bound program,” said Wendy McCulley, chief of the Office of Engagement and External Partnerships and CEO of The Foundation for Fresno Unified Students.
The Foundation for Fresno Unified Students’ mission is to ensure every student in the district has the tools and resources to reach their full potential. As the strategic fundraising partner for Fresno Unified, the Foundation for Fresno Unified Students is working with schools, the district and the wider community to drive student success through funding of the highest impact investments.
"At Fresno State, we are committed to making higher education more accessible and affordable for every student in our region,” said Dr. Saul Jiménez-Sandoval, president of Fresno State. “Through this partnership with Fresno Unified and The Foundation for Fresno Unified Students, we are not only opening doors — we are building pathways that empower students to reach their full potential and contribute meaningfully to the Central Valley’s future."

Fresno Unified Board of Education Selects Misty Her as Superintendent
The Fresno Unified Board of Education selected Misty Her to lead the state’s third-largest district as its permanent superintendent. The board’s selection follows a national search process, during which trustees confirmed that Her’s depth of experience, unparalleled skills and dedication to the students of Fresno Unified make her the ideal person to assume the top leadership role for Fresno Unified. The board announced Her as the finalist for the job at the April 23 board meeting and is expected to approve Her’s contract during the April 30 board meeting.
“Misty Her has spent her career dedicated to the students and families of Fresno Unified, building support within our staff and families because of her unmatched integrity and expertise. As an immigrant who came to this country as a child, she understands the reality of so many of our students who must overcome language and cultural barriers. A product of Fresno Unified schools, she is the ultimate success story, and an example of how caring teachers and staff can change students’ lives,” said Valerie Davis, president of the Fresno Unified Board of Education.
Her has served Fresno Unified her entire career, starting as a bilingual instructional aide more than 30 years ago. Her has served Fresno Unified as a teacher, vice principal, principal, instructional superintendent, and deputy superintendent. She was named interim superintendent in May 2024 following Bob Nelson’s announcement that he would join Fresno State as an assistant professor in the Department of Educational Leadership.
“I am absolutely committed to a new era in which our entire district is laser-focused on student achievement. We already have the new goals and guardrails in place, and I look forward to doing all in my power to bring about the academic gains our students and families deserve,” Her said. “I know firsthand the many challenges our district faces, but I believe that with the expertise and talent of our staff, collaboration and a research-based approach, we will make incredible progress. I am beyond excited about the opportunities ahead.”
Her assumes the permanent post following the adoption of her contract at the April 30th, 2025 board meeting.
National Search Validated Selection
The board hired search consultants McPherson & Jacobson, LLC on February 12th, 2025 to lead the national search to identify qualified candidates to fill the post of permanent superintendent for Fresno Unified. There were several applicants who applied from several states, with four candidates interviewed. The search was guided by the goals and guardrails adopted by the board on January 22, 2025, which reflect a student outcomes focused style of governance. With the goals and guardrails in place, the search excluded any candidates whose philosophies did not match the priorities of the community.
Board President Davis stated that during the search process, Her’s strong focus on academic achievement, accountability for both staff and students and the well-being of the entire Fresno Unified community made a lasting impression on the board. Davis also noted that Her’s extensive experience and the positive reputation she has built among teachers, administrators, students and parents distinguished her during the national search.
“As interim superintendent, Misty Her was instrumental in refocusing our district on student outcomes and achieving operational excellence, recognizing that our district was not progressing because we lacked focus and clarity districtwide. As our superintendent, I expect her to lead us to gains we have not seen before,” President Davis said.
Public input was vital in determining the kind of leadership that the district needs and deserves. With over 30 community listening sessions, the community's diverse perspectives and priorities were thoroughly considered. The insights garnered from these outreach efforts were instrumental in shaping the goals and guardrails, which guided consultants in selecting finalists and informed the board of education's final decision.
The transparent superintendent search process brought each step of the superintendent search to open session of Fresno Unified Board of Education meetings, including the RFQ for the search firm, the award of the search firm, the job description, the search screens, and the exclusionary criteria. This approach ensured that feedback and input from our staff and the public were actively sought and incorporated.
Specific terms of Her’s contract will be highlighted at the Wednesday, April 30th board meeting.
A New Focus
The board emphasized that Her’s appointment is a critical step towards focusing on improving student achievement, with both short- and long-term academic goals. They also expect her to guide the district in honoring the community’s priorities regarding resource allocation. With new goals and guardrails already established, Her will be responsible for clarifying priorities, tracking progress, aligning resources and communicating outcomes. The board believes that Her’s deep familiarity with Fresno Unified will enable her to efficiently and effectively advance these goals. Additionally, she will continue to foster key relationships and build new partnerships to further the district’s goals and vision.
Misty will be Fresno Unified’s first female superintendent since the district’s inception in 1873.

Swede Fest Returns, Adding Opportunities for Young Filmmakers
What: Swede Fest is back, with a new junior category added in collaboration with Fresno Unified
Deadline to submit a swede film: Sunday, April 27, 2025 at midnight
Event: Friday, May 2, 2025
6:30-8:30 p.m.
Where: Fresno High School, Royce Hall
1839 N. Echo Ave. (93704)
Swede Fest is back after a brief hiatus, featuring homemade recreations of popular movies. Inspired by the 2008 movie, “Be Kind Rewind,” sweded films are low-budget, homemade movie parodies that feature household props, costumes and lots of creativity. The results are intentionally low-tech, often hilarious and always entertaining.
A new competition for K-12 students has been added this year in partnership with Fresno Unified. Swede Fest Junior will shine a spotlight on the work of young filmmakers and inspire the next generation of Swede Fest participants. Winners from the competition will be screened at Swede Fest.
Swede Fest has been a Fresno tradition since 2008, celebrating the power of community storytelling and the joy of filmmaking, no Hollywood budget required. This is an opportunity for filmmakers of all skill levels to share their take on iconic films in front of a supportive audience. Film submissions should be family-friendly and no longer than four minutes. For more details, including submission guidelines, please visit SwedeFest.com.
“We are thrilled to bring Swede Fest back in 2025. This festival has always been about celebrating creativity and community storytelling without the barriers of big budgets or fancy equipment,” said Bryan Harley, Executive Director at Community Media Access Collaborative. “With the addition of Swede Fest Junior, we’re especially excited to see what the next generation of aspiring filmmakers brings to the screen. Whether it’s your first time picking up a camera or you’re a seasoned pro, Swede Fest is all about having fun and sharing your passion for movies."
The festival is open to the public and free to attend, thanks to support from Fresno Unified. Swede Fest is a project of the Community Media Access Collaborative (CMAC).
“We are thrilled that our district is supporting such a fun, uniquely Fresno event. I love that all ages and all skill levels can be part of Swede Fest, especially our students,” said Interim Superintendent Misty Her.

Crowd favorites are the drone obstacle course and BattleBots, but all the events sharpen students’ skills for the 21st century. Fifty judges are lined up to determine the top competitors.

Students have been preparing for months, using design software and 3D printers to build bridges and racecars, video editing software to produce public service announcements and “blockbuster” trailers, VEX IQ Robot Kits to build robots that can navigate mazes and battle other robots, and drones to learn piloting and navigation skills.

Fresno Unified Reaffirms Commitment to Safe and Welcoming Schools for All Students
Fresno Unified is committed to maintaining safe, supportive, and welcoming schools for all students, regardless of their immigration status. Our schools are places where every child belongs, and we take that responsibility seriously.
Late yesterday, we were made aware that a substitute teacher at one of our schools asked students inappropriate and unacceptable questions about their immigration status, including how long they have been in the country and about resident cards. These types of questions are not aligned with our district’s values or policies, and we want to be clear—this is not acceptable in any of our classrooms.
Our Human Resources team is handling the situation to ensure that those entrusted with our students reflect our unwavering commitment to creating a safe and inclusive learning environment. With a district of over 13,000 employees, we recognize that situations like this may arise, and when they do, we take immediate action to address them.
We urge families to speak with their students about the importance of reporting any concerns to a trusted adult at school. If you see something, say something—this allows us to act swiftly in ensuring our schools remain safe and welcoming spaces for all.
Fresno Unified will continue to uphold our commitment to protecting and supporting every student and family in our community. We appreciate our families and staff for their partnership in making our schools places where all students feel valued, respected, and safe.

Fresno Unified stands in unwavering support of our immigrant students, families, and employees, recognizing the invaluable contributions they make to our schools and community. We want to acknowledge those who chose to participate in yesterday’s “Day Without Immigrants,” a national demonstration highlighting the essential role of immigrants in our society.
As a district, we honor and respect the voices of our students and families. At the same time, we know that being in school every day is critical for academic success, social-emotional development, and long-term opportunities. Attendance matters, and when students miss even one day, it impacts their learning.
Yesterday, Fresno Unified’s student attendance rate was 71.3%, a staggering 18.4% decrease from the same day last year. We recognize that this drop reflects the significance of the movement and the deep ties our community has to immigration-related issues.
Our commitment remains clear: We will continue to foster an inclusive and supportive environment where ALL students feel valued, seen, and empowered. At the same time, we urge our families to prioritize daily school attendance, ensuring that our students have access to the education, resources, and opportunities that will help them thrive.
Interim Superintendent Her said, “Fresno Unified is proud to serve a diverse community, and we stand with our immigrant students, families, and staff. We recognize the deep significance of yesterday’s demonstration and respect the choices families made. At the same time, we want to remind our students that being in school every day is critical to their success. Every lesson, every connection, and every opportunity matters. Our schools are safe, welcoming places where all students belong, and we are here to support them every step of the way."
Fresno Unified is here to support every student, every day. Families who need assistance or have concerns can always reach out to their school sites or use our district resources, which are updated regularly on our website. We are stronger together, and we remain committed to serving our diverse community with love, respect, and dedication.

Office of Traffic Safety Awards $200,000 Grant to Fresno Unified for Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Program
Fresno, Calif. – Fresno Unified announced today that it has received a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to support its Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Program. The program will promote safe practices for pedestrians and bicyclists and emphasize the drivers’ responsibility to look out for other people using roads and paths. The grant program runs through September 2025.
"We are excited to receive this grant, which will allow us to significantly expand our bicycle and pedestrian safety program,” said Interim Superintendent Misty Her. “By focusing on education, awareness, and promoting safe practices, we aim to reduce crashes and prevent injuries. Ultimately, we’re working toward building more walkable and bike-friendly neighborhoods where everyone can travel safely and confidently."
Grant funds will support various activities focused on bicycle and pedestrian safety:
• Community bicycle and walk “audits” of streets with a high rate of pedestrian and/or bicyclist fatalities and serious injury crashes.
• Bicycle training courses that educate youth on safe riding behaviors.
• Community and school education presentations.
• Community bike rides that encourage and teach riders safe riding skills.
• Walking field trips with older residents and walking safety education for people who are experiencing homelessness.
• Pop-up events that promote the importance of visibility on roads with safety equipment such as reflective armbands/leg bands and bicycle headlights/taillights.
“The safety of people walking and biking on our roads is a top priority for our office,” OTS Director Barbara Rooney said. “Everyone moves, and not always by car. It’s important that we invest in efforts to protect people walking, biking and rolling that helps establish a strong traffic safety culture where everyone on California roads can travel to and from places safely.”
Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Fresno Unified Recovers Millions as Target in Check Fraud Ring
Fresno Unified uncovered earlier this year that it was a target of check fraud. The fraud involved attempts to cash unauthorized checks from Fresno Unified to one of its vendors. Fresno Unified has been fully cooperative with law enforcement and investigative agencies throughout this process. Not long after learning of the fraud, the Department of Homeland Security reached out to confirm they had found this fraud was a part of a larger check fraud ring.
The investigation revealed that several checks totaling about $7 million were fraudulently attempted. Fortunately, through swift action, about $4 million in funds were prevented from being lost. To date, some of the stolen funds have already been recovered, and we anticipate that all remaining funds will be fully recovered in due time.
In order to avoid compromising any ongoing investigations or the potential recovery of additional funds, Fresno Unified has maintained strict confidentiality about this matter until now. The safety and integrity of our financial operations remain a top priority, and we continue to work closely with all investigative bodies to resolve the situation.
Fresno Unified has investigated internally, revisiting our controls and processes to ensure we are keeping up with the ever-changing landscape of fraud.
We also wish to clarify that while the County of Fresno is a signatory on our checks, they had no involvement in this fraud and bear no responsibility for the actions that took place. The County has assisted the district since the beginning of the investigation to ensure the potential recovery of funds.
Fresno Unified remains committed to upholding the trust and confidence of the communities we serve.

District Offers Free Meals to All Students and Invites Families to View the Meals App
Fresno Unified’s Nutrition Services looks forward to welcoming students back for the 2024-25 school year with healthy meals, including several new items.
CEP allows high-poverty schools to expand access to free school meals while reducing paperwork and streamlining meal service operation. Meal applications are not required.
“We look forward to providing our students with healthy, appealing menu items that will help them focus on their learning. Our Nutrition Services team does an outstanding job preparing morning and lunch-time meals at no cost for our students,” said Interim Superintendent Misty Her.
The Nutrition Services Department is excited to introduce several new menu items, including:
- Barbecue chicken pizza
- Buffalo chicken wrap
- Teriyaki chicken with vegetable fried rice
- Chicken Ceasar salad
- Macaroni and cheese with roasted broccoli
- Barbecue tofu with cornbread
School Meals App
An app and interactive website are available for parents and guardians to easily view information on school menus for breakfast and lunch each day. The app features an image and description of food items, as well as nutrition and allergen information. The innovative and interactive website and mobile app makes school menus more convenient and informative than ever before.
The app allows students to provide feedback on their meals. Nutrition Services wants to hear from students about their meal experience.

Fresno Unified Receives Good Credit Rating for 18th Year
Moody's Investors Services has once again affirmed Fresno Unified's Aa3 rating and has projected a “stable” outlook for the district. The company is a leading source of relevant insights on exponential risk and ranks the creditworthiness of borrowers for potential investors.
Moody’s report noted “the districts growing Central Valley economy, healthy finances, with reserves at 26% of operating revenue,” and stated, “Long-term enrollment trends will remain relatively stable with projected 1% annual declines, consistent with similarly rated peers.”
A good credit rating reduces the interest rate on the issuance and refinancing of bonds, benefiting both the district and community by ensuring more tax dollars are used towards building projects and fewer are used on interest payments.
“The district’s consistent and continued strong credit rating is a testament to our team, and directly and positively impacts the communities we serve,” said Interim Superintendent Misty Her.
Moody's report also stated, “The district’s finances will stay sound despite projected spend downs, benefiting from prudent management, conservative budgeting practices and an adopted reserve policy.”

Graduation Edition of “Faces of Fresno Unified” Digital Magazine Highlights the Class of 2024
The graduation edition of Fresno Unified’s digital magazine, “Faces of Fresno Unified,” is now available. This latest edition of the magazine celebrates the achievements of the Class of 2024, recognizing valedictorians and Fresno Unified Scholarship recipients from all of the district’s high schools. In the pages of the magazine get to know a little bit about:
- Roosevelt High School scholarship recipient Allanah Everk, whose chaotic home life often kept her from attending school and caused her to struggle early on, has since blossomed into an excellent student, musician, and leader. She will attend Fresno State to become a teacher so she can assist students who face challenges with reading and math, just as she once did.
- Duncan Polytechnical High School valedictorian Bryan Flores, whose interest in the welding pathway at Duncan led him to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering at U.C. San Diego and a career in the manufacturing industry. His parents, immigrants from El Salvador, are his biggest cheerleaders.
- Sunnyside High School scholarship recipient Nancy Her wants to become a successful user experience website designer and improve the lives of her parents, refugees from Laos and Thailand. Additionally, she aims to create a safety and mental health support app for Fresno Unified students, parents, and staff. Nancy will attend UCLA to pursue her goals.
“This beautiful magazine has once again reminded me of the extraordinary abilities, resiliency and achievements of our students, and the role that our teachers and staff play in helping our students succeed,” said Interim Superintendent Misty Her.
